Keep Cool in Summer - Our Top 5 Tips For HGV Drivers

"Tips to keep cool in Summer? It's not even May yet!"

We know it's a bit early in the year to be publishing this blog, but Summer is on the way (Summer's always on the way if you think about it).

Of course, if you're reading this in the Summer, then read on for tips that'll be useful right away!

Being an HGV driver in the kind of heatwaves we've been having recently comes with its own set of challenges. Driving for long hours in a hot HGV can be both uncomfortable and dangerous. As unlikely as it would be, imagine having heatstroke behind the wheel - wouldn't be the most desirable situation to find yourself in! If you're a driver, we're sure you've already developed your own tricks and habits, but since it's so important for HGV drivers to know how to keep cool, we'll go over some essentials in this article.

Here are some tips, which really ought to be done as a bare minimum, to keep the heat off:

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water is the most important thing HGV drivers can do to stay cool in summer. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, and dizziness, all of which can be dangerous when driving. Keep a cooler or insulated water bottle in the cab of the HGV and take regular sips throughout the day. Avoid sugary drinks, as they can actually make you more dehydrated if they contain caffeine.

Of course, this is easier said than done when stuck in a truck for countless hours with limited toilet stops. Even when you have the chance to stop and take a break, it can be better to avoid restrooms with the state some of them are in!

Use Sun Shades

One of the simplest ways to keep the temperature in the HGV down is by using sun shades on the windows. These shades can block out up to 90% of the sun's rays, keeping the cab cooler and reducing the need for air conditioning. Sun shades are also affordable and easy to install, making them an excellent investment for HGV drivers trying to keep cool.

Plan Your Route

This goes without saying, but plan your route! No-one wants to be driving around in circles on a normal day, never mind when your cab turns into a sauna! The heat, the frustration, the queues, and the stupid drivers in front of you, we've all been there!

Early morning and late evening are generally the coolest times of day (and the quietest), so try to schedule your driving around these times. If you need to drive during the heat of the day, plan to take regular breaks in shaded areas to help you keep cool - and don't forget to log these breaks on your tachograph!

Dress Appropriately

Whilst I'm sure you're not planning on driving around in a suit and tie, make sure you're not overdressed!

Wearing light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing made of breathable fabrics like cotton or linen can help HGV drivers keep cool on hot days. Avoid wearing dark-coloured clothing, as it can absorb more heat and make you feel even hotter. Additionally, wearing a hat or cap can help protect your head and face from the sun's rays.

Use Air Conditioning Wisely

While air conditioning can be a lifesaver on hot days, it can also use a lot of fuel and put extra strain on the HGV's engine. Use the air conditioning wisely by setting it to a moderate temperature and turning it off when it's not needed. Additionally, parking in shaded areas can help keep the HGV cool and reduce the need for air conditioning.

Stating the obvious, but air-con and open windows don't mix! Keeping the windows up when the air-con is on helps to keep the cool air inside. Besides, the smell of queuing traffic in the late-July sun is not something you want in the cab with you.

How to Keep Cool in The Cab in Summer - Conclusion

In conclusion, it's not easy to keep cool in a HGV during the summer months, but we've all got to do the best we can to make life easier (and safer).

By staying hydrated, using sun shades, planning your route, dressing appropriately, and using air conditioning wisely, HGV drivers can stay comfortable and safe while on the road. Remember, taking care of yourself during hot weather is not only important for your own health (and comfort), but also for the safety of those around you.

Stay cool and stay safe!
