Under the EU Mobility Package, all commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes going outside of the UK into the EU must upgrade to a second-generation (also known as a Smart 2) tachograph by 31 December 2024, while vehicles registered after June 2019 have until August 2025.
For smaller vehicles between 2.5–3.5 tonnes operating across borders, the retrofit deadline is 1 July 2026.

Why Is This Upgrade Required?
The European Union’s Mobility Package introduces new measures to enhance road safety, improve working conditions, and promote fair competition across the transport sector. This regulatory framework brings significant changes, aiming to create equal market access while prioritising driver welfare and operational safety.
A core aspect of the Mobility Package is the Smart 2 tachograph legislation, introducing a new, advanced digital tachograph to replace older models. These upgraded system improves data accuracy, enhances detection of tampering attempts, and supports road authorities in enforcing safety standards more effectively.
Upgrade As Soon As Possible
With potentially thousands upon thousands of vehicles still waiting to be upgraded, it is recommended you book yours in for the upgrade as soon as possible to avoid potential delays.
Avoid Potential Fines
If your vehicle is not fitted with the correct tachograph after the above dates, you will not be complying with EU regulations if driving outside the UK. These fines can amount to thousands of pounds, much more than the cost of having a new tachograph fitted!
